Second day in Johannesburg!!

Today was our first full day in Johannesburg!!! We started off the day by heading to Constitutional Hill, which was a prison used during Apartheid to hold freedom fighters. We toured the different blocks, the women's prison block as well as the white and black areas of the prison. We saw the solitary cells the prisoners were held in, as well as the prison showers. We also toured the cells where Mandela and Gandhi were held when they were imprisoned there. The tour ended with a visit to the Constitutional Court, which is South Africa's national human rights court. The juxtaposition of the court next to the grounds of the prison, showed us the strength of the country. It was an incredible experience for all of us.
After Consitutional Hill we went to Museum Africa. This museum was devoted to South Africa's pre-colonial history. There were a lot of different artifacts and showed the diverse cultural past of South Africa. There was also a photography exhibit about Apartheid, as well as a exhibit on political cartoons. The museum really shows to us the diverse cultural past of South Africa.
After our visit at the Museum we went to see the play The Mother of All Eating. This play was political, focusing on the current issue of political corruption in the South African government. This play helped us to understand the current political issues facing South African society.
We then finished our day with dinner at a jazz club in Sofiatown. Overall another incredible day in Johannesburg!!
